With the Mounts of Mayhem update bringing back the zombie horse (which burns in daylight), the skeleton horse now stands out as the only overworld undead mob unaffected by sunlight. For parity’s sake, it would make sense for skeleton horses to burn in daylight as well.
However, Mojang has previously avoided this because existing skeleton horses in players’ worlds would suddenly start burning. My proposed solution fixes that elegantly:
Allow skeleton horses to wear armor. There’s no real gameplay reason they shouldn’t—especially since they’re still “horses.”
Introduce a new item: Chain Horse Armor. This would automatically appear on existing skeleton horses after the update, preserving them while fitting their undead aesthetic.
Have new skeleton horse traps spawn with either chain or iron horse armor. This not only looks amazing but also makes the encounter slightly safer, as players are less likely to accidentally kill the horse while fighting the riders.
This approach keeps game balance, adds medieval flair, and finally gives us the long-requested chain horse armor—while ensuring older worlds remain unaffected.
