To start, I think this idea would work well as we will have Stone spears for early-game players, and the wooden Spear will mostly go unused. In history, jousting lances had blunt tips and were designed to shatter. When a knight landed a hit, their lance would shatter as a safeguard for the other participant. It is also incredibly cool.
To add this to Minecraft, I think that the Wooden Spear can get a special function no other lance has. It jabs normally, of course, but, upon going full tilt, and at a good speed should shatter upon a successful hit. Having a loud wood cracking sound, and adding a bunch of particles as the Spear shatters would be so fun, and so good for minigames and player fun.
Not to mention, interactions could be added with Target blocks, the Wooden Spear still cracking but able to send a signal through the target. The Wood Spear would be perfect for this, as it is cheap and most players will end up replacing it with a Stone Spear quickly. Adding an enchantment wouldn't make sense for a wooden tool, and everything else will do too much damage for minigames, especially on Hardcore, I feel. But mostly, this would bring Jousting into Minecraft with a simple change, and I just think it would be so purely awesome to watch your friends' lance shatter and break while a loud crack plays.
