With the upcoming Nautilus mob, it gives the new effect, said during Minecraft Live to be Breath of the Nautilus. So far we only really know that it is very similar if not identical to water breathing, and is only available by riding a nautilus. The Breath of the Nautilus effect shouldn't be unlimited breathing, but it should be based on how nautiluses breathe in real life, giving more complexity to the mob as well.
In real life, nautiluses can only breathe when moving. If they stop moving, then water isn't flowing through their gills, and they suffocate. Nautiluses cannot inhale, so oxygenated water has to flow inside them through the current.
With the Breath of the Nautilus effect, your breath bubbles should depend on your speed underwater. More like real life nautiluses, when you are moving underwater quickly, your bubbles should increase depending on how fast you are. But if you stop moving, then your bubbles also stop increasing. This way, you will still be able to breathe underwater when moving, but if you stop, then your bubbles will go down.
I am not proposing that nautiluses should suffocate if they stop moving, only players riding nautiluses.
