The idea of spears in Minecraft is great, and we don't have any snapshot or beta to try it out yet, but it seems to be unbalanced as it was shown and the texture and animations don't fit with the rest of the game.
First, the texture doesn't have the same colors as the rest of the tools, it just doesn't fit at all. The animation is also too much. Look at the shield for example! It just has 2 states; blocking and in the hand/offhand, no animations for that. The spear's animations just don't fit. And still it's too different compared to a sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel or hoe, doesn't fit with the rest of tools. It's not like the mace or trident which are completely unique weapons, the spear is supposed to be another default weapon and it doesn't seem like one at all.
Secondly, the amount of damage it does IS A LOT. 13 damage to a full copper player from one single hit in a slow horse with an iron spear? That's more than a netherite axe with sharpness 5!
The spear doesn't only need nerfing, it also needs a new texture and new animations that fit with the rest and a complete rework on how it works. It should be another vanilla weapon, not a unique weapon like a trident or a mace.
