Ever since we had armor trims added to the game, Elder Guardians have dropped the Tide Armor Trim at around 20% of the time. A problem with this is that some people have had their worlds for far, far longer than the armor trim has existed for, meaning some people might have their close by Ocean Monuments completely looted. This makes the Tide Armor Trim a lot more difficult to come by, especially since even if they do find a new Monument, they might not even get the Trim.
An idea I had to work around this was allowing Elder Guardians to respawn, but very rarely (1/500? 1/1000? Idk, I'm not sure how rare it could be for it to be balanced), that way you still can't reliably farm free Tide Armor Trims (and sponges), but they are still a constantly renewable resource if you're patient enough.
Another idea was to have Guardians who have been loaded in long enough eventually become Elders, almost like the Guardians choose a new king or leader or something else adjacent.
If Mining Fatigue is the reason the Elders don't respawn, perhaps there could be a way to distinguish the initially spawned Elders with the ones that spawn in after the fact by removing the ability to cause Mining Fatigue from the post-world-generation Elders?
I fully expect nothing to come of this, all of this was just an idea that came to me while eating breakfast that I felt like I had to get out there. Thank you for your time regardless.
