Shelves are fantastic for easy switching items between storage to hotbar, but they shed light on another issue of inventory management, which is switching and organizing items within player inventory to the hotbar. It's easy to swap items with a shelf if they're in your hotbar, but everything else in your own inventory is tedious to swap out.
Here's how we could improve the "Pick Block" button, while also introducing quick and easy hotbar swapping for the player;
When clicking Pick Block:
- If the player's looking at a block (or item in a frame OR shelf) that's in their hotbar, their cursor moves to that block (they hold it in hand).
- If the player's looking at a block or item that's in their inventory, the rows of their inventory shift down 'til the row with the picked item is in their hotbar.
- Otherwise, when using the Pick Block without looking at a block or item that's in their inventory, their inventory rows shift down only once.
In other words, with this, you'd be able to organize your own inventory into rows of hotbars, each with its own use. Builders could swap between their wood palette and stone palette with a click. Shelves would be even more useful as an in-world way to store and pickup hotbars, and you'd be able to use them to automatically "pick" the appropriate row in your inventory to switch out.
