I understand that Minecraft usernames are globally unique and tied to Mojang accounts. However, as the number of players continues to grow, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to claim meaningful and personal names.
Names are an important part of identity and immersion in multiplayer experiences. Therefore, I would like to suggest a feature that allows players to set custom display names per server — either as a personal nickname visible in chat, or as a toggleable option that lets servers choose between:
-
Displaying the Mojang account username (disable or 0)
-
Or displaying a nickname set by the player for that server (enable or 1)
This would not compromise security or account verification, as all backend systems can still rely on UUIDs and the official Mojang name. But it would greatly improve personal expression and reduce the frustration players experience when they cannot use the name they identify with.
If this feature were officially implemented, it would also resolve the issue where players using existing nickname plugins had to deal with mismatched display names and command-based usernames.
Additionally, this feature could help solve issues on adventure maps, event servers, and streaming servers where name duplication can prevent players from using desired names.
For many players, name preferences are a core part of their creative identity. Minecraft is a game built around expression and freedom, and allowing more flexible name options would reflect that philosophy.
