Combat Preview 8c added a faster PvP system, slightly nerfed sword reach and attack damage for balance, and introduced the ability to hold down left-click to attack. It felt smooth and fun to play while still keeping the recently introduced items, weapons, and gear. I think this version should come back, with holding down left-click to attack as a setting players can choose.
The toggle for holding down left-click to attack, introduced in Combat Preview 8c, worked well overall. However, to make this feature function properly in competitive PvP scenarios, knockback needs to be adressed and behave consistently. In high CPS situations, client-side hit detection can reduce knockback, which undermines the intended balance. Since mobs and entities already use server-side logic, applying the same logic to player combat would ensure the toggle functions fairly, especially in competitive scenarios, and helps discourage external 3rd party tools (autoclickers).
Adding this change would enable further parity across Java and Bedrock Editions. This kind of PvP would feel closer to the Bedrock version of the game, which is more fast-paced and easier for new players. It would also allow older Java servers (such as Hypixel) to update without losing the style of gameplay they are known for.
This idea does not remove anything. It only improves something Mojang and Jeb already tested in Combat Preview 8c and gives players a way to enjoy smoother combat with today’s tools, items, and gear.
