LAN and Gamepass

I have Minecraft on my PC and my son started playing recently. Bought an xbox so we can plan play together - him on counsel and me on PC. Apparently after buying the game on each system I now have to sign up for one (maybe two?) GamePass so I can sit 5 feet away from him to play across LAN?

That is insane. It may be a better/cheaper to return the xbox and get him a PC with a controller. Multiplayer LAN should not be behind the Gamepass paywall.

    LAN isn't locked behind gamepass. The only connection between Xbox Game Pass and Minecraft is that game pass gives you access to the game.

    We are experiencing this same issue with both of my sons consoles attempting to play over LAN as soon as we try and join the LAN world we hit a Microsoft paywall and after reading discussion on Reddit this doesn't appear to be an isolated case.
