Currently, the render distance setting only applies horizontally. Vertically, the game tries to render the entire chunk.
In 1.17 and 1.18, taller worlds are possible.
However, in taller worlds, framerate drops significantly when you are looking up or down, due to the game trying to render the entire chunk. In most cases, you are only looking at a small portion of the blocks. (Surface, cave floor, cave ceiling)
Basic culling of all blocks beyond the point where the fog is identical to the sky color would be great. (rendering-wise, not simulating-wise of course)
