I keep losing my horse when its not on a lead

I get a horse, pretty fast, jumps high, and I have diamond horse armor on it. I didn't put a lead on it because I wasn't going far and at the time I didn't need my horse. I come back in about 3 minutes, my horse is nowhere to be seen. It's gone. I look all around the area I was at and I can't find it. This is the second time it has happened. I don't know how it happens but if you can fix this, please do. I don't want to keep losing my horses. I have bad attachment issues and I love my horses. I have cried multiple times sadly.

    For me, any horse that doesn't have a saddle, leash, or armor despawns within 3 minutes (and I tamed it!)

    this has happened multiple times and makes me very sad.
