coal ore gen

I've been mining for over an hour (on the latest snapshot w everything enabled) without finding anything, not even coal. I've changed location and even cheated using tnt, and it's a bit of a let down? Like I'm not a hardcore miner but when you spend 60-85 minutes strip mining and can't find coal on your first couple of days it really stops your motivation.

I've heard ore generation is being changed, but I still think coal PLEASE should be "surface" generated to a degree. It shouldn't take a pro to find coal for your torches. dont know if anyone else had this problem or if its just bad luck though, which is why im posting
