I think with the Caves and Cliffs update including the Shulk, that seems to be a sort of living conscious entity I think it could be used to shoehorn in a new type of redstone farm. These would be blocks or areas that you could mark out and a craftable item could be placed down and gather resources from the environment over time while the player is online. These would cover for the farms that currently cannot be fully automated such as fishing or crop (ie; potato or carrot farms).
They could be created using a sort of Shulk material along with some items that would depend on the purpose of the farm. An example would be a fishing farm, when placed one block above water with a 5 X 5 X 5 area of water below it, it would generate fish. It would not be able to fish up things like enchanted books or trash and it would be particularly slow to prevent it from being overpowered. It could be crafted using a fishing rod, Shulk material, redstone and wood. It could have hoppers running out of it but it would only have 5 inventory slots. This could be used for crops, ores veins (temporarily) or any other currently non farmable resource.
I understand that this could be very overpowered so it would need some more consideration to prevent its abuse.
