There's already an iron golem that protects the village.

I have also thought on this.

For those of us who love the Medevil format and buildings. This would be so fun.

So let me help to flesh this out if I can and see if this helps.

A player could build a barracks. (combine a bed and chest together to make a bed and foot locker.)
For each one of these created they could hire a villager to become a defender. Thus the payment of 25 emeralds would create a footman. This villager would now become a hireling. Then if there is an armor stand built and combined with the bed and wall locker. The player could put armor on the hireling. So you could use leather or whichever you decide to give them for armor.

25 would get the footman they get a spear
for 50 you can hire an archer or swordsman Archers come in crossbow or bow and is random which you get.

For 75 emeralds you can hire a sergeant of the barracks who comes with sword and shield or two axes.

For 100 Emeralds you can hire a knight.

In this format when we build our castles and or towns we can install barracks. These hirelings wander the village and will respond to mobs.

To balance this every hireling increases the chance of an Illiger raid. Thus the more you hire the more chances you have of being attacked.
