Currently, the player can kill most mobs (iron golem, enderman, vindicator, etc.) without taking damage as long as they build up to three blocks high. To counter this;
-All hostile land mobs with melee attacks (except for spiders and zombie variants) should attempt to back away for one block if they are in reach of the player but the player is unreachable.
-Endermen would instead teleport away when they are aggravated towards an unreachable player. If the player is reachable again, they would teleport near the player just to attack them. This would also add to the creepiness of Endermen.
-It would be in character for zombie variants to not avoid getting hit as they wouldn't have the intelligence to do so.
