This idea is similar to some that have already been posted here, but I think it's different enough in implementation and purpose to deserve its own thread. What I want is a somewhat dangerous npc that can defend an area against hostile mobs and, more importantly, other players. To this end I suggest the idea of mercenary Illagers.
Mercenary illagers are tamed Illagers (Pillagers, Vindicators, and Evokers) that defend a certain area from other players and hostile mobs, they are tamed by a special banner and require emeralds to maintain their allegiance. Mercenary Illagers are different from other mobs in that they will attack other players, can provide ranged attacks that iron golem and dogs cannot (snow golems can but they are low-grade trash for a variety of reasons), and automatically stay in one area rather than follow the player (unlike dogs).
Because describing the exact mechanics of Mercenary Illagers puts me over the word count, I'm gonna do that in the comments.
