The base of the game is the interaction between the player and the world by clicking, with an item or bare hand, in a block/entity. But when creating new features and new itens through the commands of the game, there are only a few ways the detect the stipulated conditions to the desired costume events/itens/effects, such as the rod with a carrot, often used to create new itens that involve a "right click function".
But if the game allowed the player to detect any right or left click in game so that he is able to make click scoreboards that do not require the use of an specific item, as well as the NBT data, in the player, showing not only witch block/entity he is currently facing but also witch side/section and if it's in range of interaction, those two things among the already existing NBT data for the itens the player is currently holding would allow us to create any interaction between any block/entity and any item in hands or the player it self, making easier to create datapacks as well as expanding the range of things you are able to create.
Also, i personally think that you should be able to include costume models, textures and sounds into the datapack file, but i'm not sure if this isn't already a feature.
