I felt like archaeology could be an exciting future update, and I want to state my reasons why..
Structures Changes:
Archaeology could give some structures like the abandoned mineshaft, the desert well, and the abandoned village a new purpose, I feel like these old structures would be perfect to search for artifacts because it would add more reasons to get excited and search for these places! Some spawn locations for the new archaeology sites should be near rivers and lakes, because just like in the real world, past civilizations usually started near rivers or lakes.
What you can find in these structures:
Archaeology can be a great way of telling your world's past, having journals or some new items that can be very important relics in your world. Rubies can be a great relic, If you were to dig up ruby in these archaeology sites, this would tell a story that ruby was a valuable currency and treasure in older times, this does not need to be ruby specifically, it could be some primitives tools like a used stone axe, or some past food like moldy bread and poisonous potatoes.
The purpose of the archaeology update is to give your Minecraft worlds history and a new purpose, making you interested in finding the largest important factor of your minecraft world!
