Illusioner was an impostor

Illusioner now spawns near or in villages. When entering a village, these mobs will be disguised as a villager. While in a disguise state, Iron golems and mobs will not attack Illusioners. The only difference disguised Illusioner had with villagers is that they can't get a job and only reveal itself when hit by a player or when a raid occurs, they'll join the raid. Occasionally during nighttime, they will go to other villager houses and silently murder them without agro-ing the golems. When revealing an Illusioner, you'll get a new achievement "Sherlock".

Or they could just live in the villages, except mobs don't attack them and they can prevent you from sleeping.
