The cancellation of the "Super Duper Graphics Pack" was disappointing, but I think there should be a way to make something come of whatever work they put into it thus far.
What I am suggesting are sets of texture packs and shaders, each suited to a different hardware level, which the user can set to use just as easily as other graphics settings. It could range from "classic" to "8k HD" and from water being what it is now to lifelike quality.
My guess is that the reason for the cancellation of the "Super Duper Graphics" pack was the difficulty in getting it to work without causing problems for older machines, but if it's done like this it would allow users with newer hardware computers (or the latest consoles) to do in Vanilla what people have been doing with mods for years.
In addition to textures and shaders, there are some quality of life improvements that can be made to the way blocks go together as an option. For example, in other voxel games like "Eco" they have terrain generate with curved corners and actual hill slopes depending on how the blocks fit together. If Minecraft had an option for that, and if it came out aloneside HD graphics with the new caves update coming out, we'd actually have realistic circular caverns to explore. And, being a setting, if someone wants to be more blocky for building in they can just switch to classic block mode.
Really, I see no reason why not to do this. It wouldn't have to be nearly as good as what we were promised to be an improvement.
