While looking at the Underwater Caves, I couldn’t help but think about how perfect of an environment it is for some massive and strong hostile mob. With the reward of more exposed ores, why not add a bit more risk?
I imagine a Mob A type of squid monster. Something horrifying, unfeeling, and almost alien looking. With the enclosed spaces, dark backdrops, and a reduced vision underwater, I believe it could be a true horror. I recall a developer once talking about how they wanted to replicate the terror of a new player’s first night, and I see no better way than while a player is in their most vulnerable environment.
As for behavior, you could probably stick with the blind theme and have it sense when someone is swimming quickly. It’d have to be a decent bit faster than the player, and when it grabs you be focused on more DPS damage to contrast the Warden. For example, one heart every second, which you can escape by doing “x” amount of damage to the tendril grabbed you. Afterwards it’d act kinda like a shark, circling around before striking once again. You could even incorporate the Glow Squid. They could spawn around and orbit it, acting as a beacon to the player warning them of its presence (Because I think we can all agree fans are unhappy about its current usefulness).
The Deep Dark is meant to be terrifying, and I think something like this would drastically improve the atmosphere while also satisfying veteran player without also alienating the newer ones.
