Desert temples traps shouldn't have a pressure plate. The chests should be trapped chests. One of the chests could ignite the tnt. Another chest could disarm the trap. The orientation of the mechanism could be generated randomly so the players wouldn't know which chest was which. This would give the desert temples some new life without overhauling the structure. Adding challenge to a structure that has essentially lost its charm.
Edit: In order to prevent the player from mining out the TNT, there should be a new type of TNT called aged TNT that explodes when the player punches it. This would make sense, since these traps are supposed to be really old. Aged TNT should not be craftable.
