a way to place a sign without it prompting you to write something

There should be a way to place a sign without it prompting you to write something on it (like placing the sign while holding the Shift key) so that if you are using a sign for something other than writing a message (water elevators, mob traps, etc.) you can quickly place the signs without having to press Esc every time you place a sign.
