I think that Desert Wells are a bit of a letdown. For something that has a 1/1000 or 1/500 chance of spawning, it should bring a bit more into the game. I think it should be like an ocean monument, a challenge, but you don't have to do it. It should be a dungeon kind of thing, with traps and mechanics, even a few new blocks, but not every desert well should have this. I think that once you get within a certain distance of a desert well, it should start up a sandstorm, with particles like snow and a thick Nether-like mist. You should take occasional damage if you stay out in it too long. The block in the middle of the pillar should be replaced with chiselled sandstone. You need to get across the darker quicksand by parkouring over it, onto the normal blocks of sand. Quicksand would act similarly to powder snow, but you cannot go over it and as soon as your head goes under, you take suffocation damage. Next, you break the block below the water and it cascades down and hits a barricade. Now is when you get a mining fatigue effect for ten minutes. You can go into four rooms, each having a chest at the end. One is a trap corridor, blocked by a puzzle piston door, one is a parkour course over lava, the third is a mob spawner battle, which would either be a hidden husk spawner or a chain suspended cave spider spawner. The fourth would be where a new miniboss spawns: a large scorpion, which attacks with a crusher tail and pincers.
