Currently, once a villager claims a composter and becomes a farmer, during work hours they hang around the job site and replant whatever crop is ready to be harvested, occasionally filling their composter and bonemeal-ing some crops. The issue with this simple system is with how it conflicts with certain role-playing/immersive village builds.
It conflicts because farmers are able to manage whatever farm plot they see, regardless of the intended function of that plot. For example, a village might have multiple plots, each for a specific plant to grow. The farmers however cannot see the distinction and by chance will mix up the plants being grown in different plots.
One idea is to make farmers always reach their claimed profession block, the composter before beginning their work period. This may help as during work periods farmers tend to stay near their claimed composter and their plot and are unlikely to move away to other plots to mix up crop planting. The farmers could also be restricted from picking up plant seeds outside of their work period as well, to prevent cross contamination.
Another idea is to limit farmers to only interacting with crops that are directly connected adjacent to each other, +/- one block vertically, within a certain radius from a claimed composter. For example, a farmer will tend to all the connected farmland in a field close by their composter, but will not interact with farmland separated from it.
