The overworld has all sorts of challenges like Elder Guardians, Ravagers... but the Nether, surprisingly, lacks a tough miniboss mob. The Nether Terror is a giant centipede that spawns on areas with a lot of lava (such as lava lakes), requiring a 5x4x5 space to spawn. They swim in lava, poking its head out every so often to let players know something dangerous is there. They can easily be avoided, as they are neutral mobs at first, and only becomes hostile if it is attacked, or if a player submerged into lava.
Once it is hostile, it'll spit lava at the player (fire/projectile protection will help). The lava spit, if it hits the ground, will create small puddles of lava which'll disappear. It also has a melee attack for players that get too close. Bane of Arthropods is effective, if you can traverse lava. It has 80 health (40 hearts), along with an armor stat.
Nether Terrors drop Lava Crystals. When placed, the crystals absorb surrounding lava similar to sponges. These filled crystals can then be used as fuel, which empties the crystal, allowing it to be used as lava sponges again. These crystals in item form are not destroyed by lava or fire. They're great for decoration, and to protect your base from lava griefing. It also has a rare drop (1% chance) of Ancient Debris, making it renewable, but it's so difficult to get that mining is still preferable.
In Minecraft, a maxed-out player doesn't have much challenge anymore, but this'll help a bit. It's still very avoidable, though!
