Going to the nether fortress in my opinion takes little preperation. Me and my friend took out loads of monsters in one with at best iron gear and it was a soul sand valley. Some things I believe would make the nether fortress harder are things like this. Maybe wither skeletons summon blazes when at exactly 1 health. So in this case if your not there for blazes and can not deal with blazes you should get a sword strong enough to kill the wither skeleton without it reaching one health. a way to make them hard to navigate would be making it so some bridges have fallen over all the way and maybe to make it cooler a few of the cracked nether brick blocks. Down here will live the charred blaze that supposedly lost its fire and will shoot smoke puffs and blind you instead. These drop a charred rod and to turn it to normal so its useful you need a fire charge. Also down here could be wither traps which will pop out of slightly darker nether bricks giving the player wither effect. Nether update surely did make the nether actually dangerous but not the fortresses.
