in lots of games nowadays, there are settings to dynamic resolution: toggle, Yaxis max percentage, Xaxis max percantage, target framerate
What it does is when game doesnt have resources to make frame in time, it will make frame with smaller resolution and scaling it up to native resolution.
This would be a step in right direction optimalizing minecrafts performance even if it is hard to implement and would be good in both of the main editions of minecraft.
it may be set to off by default because i know these features make bugs like nothing but if it will be implemented, many people which have high framerate monitors and/or pc 'potatoes' will like it
disclaimer: this doesnt change the resolution in which minecraft runs (this would make screen black and rerender chunks for a second), it just makes render quality worse for more frames
