A Mob based on Medusa. If the Player looks at the mob or makes eye contact (Medusa also looks at the player) within a certain radius a "distraction effect" is given to them (he/she cannot look away, the vision is focused on Medusa and all other mobs around them will be invisible). The Player can walk backwards to get out of the distraction-range or use items (for example sunglasses, could be crafted with tinted glass and copper and used like the spyglass).
Instead of snakes, Medusa's hair are made out of silver fish. When a player/mob is distracted, Medusa will send out a silverfish, if it reaches the player (the player can't see it if distracted), it will turn him/her into stone for a certain amount of time. While petrified, the player is immune to other mob damage, only Medusa can hurt the player in this situation (she has to petrify her enemies because she walks rather slow).
Mobs like zombies, skeletons and creepers are also distracted and can be petrified and if Medusa hurts them, they will stay petrified. Petrified mob heads (creeper head etc.) could be found at archeological dig sites.
A splash potion can be used to cure players from petrification.
