The author tag of a written book should be raw JSON text.

Currently, the author tag for a written book is exclusively plain text. Attempting to put raw JSON text using a command like /data will cause the text to be as is—without fancy formatting. Letting raw JSON text in the author tag will allow richer item customization, while also setting in line with pretty much all other text in the game. As far as I am aware, the author tag in a written book is the only modifiable plain text in the entire game.

    Isn't the title tag (the title of the book) also plain text too, or is it JSON text as well?

    @ExpertCoder2306 It appears that the title tag is also plain text, which is even weirder. I get the author tag being plain text, sort of, but why the title tag?

    Creeperodst658 I had a hunch that maybe those text fields used the legacy formatting system with the section sign §. Using an NBT editor to insert the codes returned negative—it seems like they truly are plain text.

    This is such a small change that either it won't be implemented, or it'll silently be implemented without further response to this thread (but of course we hope for the latter.) In the meantime, you can always change the book's display.Name tag—it uses JSON formatting and it takes priority over the book title.
