Separate nether portal connection issue

When I want to play with some friends, obviously at some point we need to make nether portals and we live far from each other. So we eventually make the portals and we spawn at one specific portal of the two of ours, and no matter how far away we make the portal, we spawn at that one portal. It is very annoying, especially when we need a better portal spawn with better terrain. I think this should be changed, so that we can go our own separate ways without interfering with foes.
