So the idea is to procedurally generate the structures themselves from a set of modular pieces, allowing for the structures to vary in size, dimensions, format, appearance, contents, and pallet. This would allow for more interesting experiences, a reason to keep exploring, and allow for structures to appear in other biomes by swapping the pallet of blocks they're built of and the loot they contain. The structures that do have some procedural generation are cool and all, but most of them (stronghold, nether fortress) still feel pretty samey. I love the various temples as much as the next guy, but I can only find the same desert temple so many times before I want to see some variety, and I know more than a few share that sentiment.
Pretty much every professional game uses modular building models because its efficient and it can allow artists to build hundreds of unique-looking buildings from a single set of modules, giving structures a sense of continuity, but not becoming overly repetitive. Minecraft's procedural generation would be able to take this to the extreme by even switching up pallets. This would also improve Mojang's and modders' capabilities to add to structures in the future as they could just add individual modules to existing structures instead of replacing the whole thing. It would give each world a lot more diversity and personality, especially with the archeology system coming up, putting a bigger emphasis on each world's unique history.
