Currently all light sources in the game act very similarly, you have light emitting blocks and depending on the distance from those blocks the light level decreases, most of the time from 15 to 0.
I would really love to have some more options here. Not with the textures of those light emitting blocks, where we already have a multitude of different ones. But with the way they cast light. For example, I would love a kind of directional light that casts light from high above to the ground. Something which you could hang from the ceiling of a tall ceiling and it would still cast light onto the ground.
At the moment we have no real way of modifying the geometry and range of light sources. You could have light sources that cast light into one half space but not the other, or colored light, or very narrow laser like beams, that only cast light onto a few blocks but from very far away.
IMO, the 15 block limit to light sources is also really tiny. Builds get really big very quickly if you want to have details. And right now, the only real way to spawn proof your builds is to quite literally litter them with light sources. Dont get me wrong, sometimes that can look good, but it makes big expansive cave builds almost always look dusky and dark, which limits expressability.
