A short-term solution to add and test out PvP in the game to see how it would perform as a more structured mechanic, there should be a PvP on/off toggle in one of the in-game menu's of Dungeons. When you select on, it has you confirm (so you don't enable by accident) and you can then fight against any player you have inside your multiplayer world, within any Minecraft Dungeons level.
What is to gain from this? It will allow the developers to start gauging things like PvP balance of different equipment loadouts, see how players actually engage in PvP combat, see how the gameplay is (do players just 1 shot kill each other, or is it a more drawn out fight? Does damage need to be lessened on other players? etc).
For the player community, it adds a further incentive to collect the best gear, and try different gear setups to fight against other players setups. Competitive play among friends generally is enjoyable to a large portion of the gaming community, adding endless hours of fun for a lot of players within Minecraft Dungeons.
The information gathered from this early implementation of PvP could be used to create a more structured experience either with custom maps, game modes, or ways to fight against players that are not just on your friends list, as well as include additional aesthetic items (not functional ones, we don't want to force players to PvP to get better gear).
