Better Bats

In the current version of Minecraft, bats are not very complex. Now that the Caves And Cliffs Update is announced, it would be the perfect time to improve bats.

Here are some improvement ideas for bats:

  • Bats spawning in groups: In nature bats normally live in groups. In Minecraft, bats should also spawn in bigger groups.
  • Hunting: Most bats consume insects. My idea is to add fireflies to the new caves. They would be a source of light, illuminating the ores at the ceiling of caverns. Bats could hunt and eat the fireflies.
  • Bats eating nectar: Some bat species eat nectar. These bats could inhabit the new lush caves and eat the nectar of the new flowers.

    I had the idea of bats pollinating Glowberries like Bees do for other plants. Thoughts?

    I love the nectar idea! The bats in Minecraft look like some species of North American Microbat while eat insects, and while it would make my entire year for Mojang to add more types of bats (my fav animal) so an Australian fruit bat can eat nectar, I'm not sure if they would do it so having them get nectar from the lush caves and insects from fireflies is a good idea. 

    What about echolocation? Bats in caves may be drawn towards structures and ores with a high chance of coal or iron and a lower chance of diamonds or gold. It would be nice to give them a purpose since everyone I play with gets annoyed by the squeaking and kills them.

    Bats flying over crops or sculks (seems they hinted it was some sort of organism) increases grow speed, which then you also get bat boxes. Naturally, they only fly at night to fertilize, giving them a use and potentially encouraging people to build real bat boxes.

    YESSSS i agree, but maybe add some help with them. perhaps they should also have an enemy mob (phantoms?). and i saw how u flew in the cave with your elytra...what if bats gave you a boost? they all fly around you while youre in flight! and maybe add color variations.

    Bats should also be tamed using fruit and they should be able to find ores for you using echolocation since they use echolocation in real life

    i feel that bats could target the already existing bugs in Minecraft (spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, and bees) as a new farm mechanic.  they could be used for a non-player powered spider eye farm.  in order to defend your bee hives from bat attacks, you could set up glowberry vines or sweet berry bushes as a distraction.  
    Many real world bats eat fruit, so having them eat berries, like foxes, as well as apples and melon slices would be cool too.  right now, glowberry farms are stuck as one block tall, but with bats, you could bring them into the 3rd dimension.

    This looks pretty good so far. Prehaps they can be given a more slow deliberate flight and made so they don't fly into lava accidentally.

    I think bats should have a day/night cycle. At night, they pathfind to the surface to hunt, during the day they pathfind to the caves to sleep. This can add atmosphere but also give players a sense of time underground and possible help them find their way out of (or into) the caves.

    and also different types like the Fox bats, Fruit bats, and/or Yoda bats. or maybe like the cats when they have variables when you tame them

    Bats should be in packs 1-6. Bats should drop BAT wings, for use in either crafting leather products or potions.
