With the advent of the cave update, the mineshaft is, in my mind, no longer adequate as the only massive underground structure (strongholds are also impressive, but they are very rare). Hence, I propose a new structure: The decaying canal. Once the pride of an ancient civilization, this wretched tunnel has fallen into disrepair and is populated by drowned and infested with the subterranean horrors Caves and Cliffs has up its sleeve!
Much like the mineshaft, the canal is a network of tunnels deep underground. However, it is much deeper than the mineshaft. This structure, however, spawns in mostly straight lines with few turns and branches. It is basically a 5 block deep tunnel, filled at least 2 blocks high with water. These canals, despite the speed of travel by boat, are way less friendly than mineshafts. Being mostly straight lines, there is only one way forward. If a warden or pack of drowned blocks your way, either plow through or turn back. The canals are not spacious, instead being quite cramped, and they are always poorly lit. Sometimes they are entirely flooded, other times they have collapsed or crossed into caves. Periodically, there is a small rest stop carved into the wall in which loot barrels can be found, along with a crafting table. The barrels contain basic items as well as some ores, as well as a diamond and an enchanted book or two. All in all, the decaying canal is not for the faint of heart, and its wondrous riches come with substantial risks.
