Since the world may be getting deeper I would suggest revising the mining in its current form. Currently You go from:
Wood -> Stone -> Iron -> Diamond
To me this seems to easy for now veteran players and makes this part of the game quite dull and too fast. Its in the name MINEcraft is literally half of the premise. I suggest adding more tool tiers to help bring more interest to mining making it not only more varied but also more enjoyable and difficult. My proposal is to add in Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby ores and tool sets. In addition to make it more difficult increase the rarity of currently existing diamond ore and force players to mine at certain depths by having ores spawn in certain layers not just X layer and below. Also limit players from reaching lower depths that contains these increasingly rare ores by making stone at lower depths only be breakable by the highest tier of tools available to the player at those depths. My new proposed order would be:
Wood -> Stone -> Iron(60-100) -> Emerald(60-80) -> Sapphire(40-60) -> Ruby(20-40) -> Diamond(1-20)
() = layers the ore is available, only an example of my thoughts.
Diamonds would become even rarer and I would place in these tiers Sapphire or Ruby around current Diamond rarity. In addition to new ores in these zones special areas could be added to specific layers to help encourage players to mine in certain layers for something they want specifically. New non-tool ores could also be introduced in certain layers.
