It makes sense because horses aren’t just passive in real life. Maybe if any player or mob hits a horse, the horse will kick it with it’s hind leg, dealing a good 6.5 blocks of knockback, as well as 3.5 hearts of damage. It also has a reach of 2 blocks, being farther than most melee mobs. This should also apply 40% of the time a player tries to tame a wild horse. And if you have successfully tamed a horse, it will defend you. So if you managed to get diamond horse armor, you can have a pretty defensive bodyguard. This should also apply to donkeys and mules.
