Have a world that mimic's real life.  Adults work and take care of the house, kids go to school, play with other kids.  Disasters can happen, either man made or by nature.  Have police stations, fire departments and hospitals that can be utilized. Characters can communicate and call for help if disaster strikes.  They adults can use the money they make at their job to fix up their house, add on to their house or buy a new house along with any and all decorations for a home or yard.  You can also buy vehicles etc.
