Our household has a home server that has been edited and grown through many years of Minecraft feature additions.
Now that MC supports more dimensions, instead of having to edit a world and update it, allow us to save the old world as a parallel world (alternate dimensions) and provide a way to key a portal to move between dimensions (non-survival).
1. Offer an Upgrade option that saves your Overworld/Nether/End as named or numbered dimensions of that type and creates the usual dimensions as completely new (but offer to use the same or new seed)
2. Allow creating a portal with a dimension-block containing the target dimension id to connect them (a portal with two or more such blocks won't open)
This would allow keeping and accessing awesome history while allowing the normal dimensions to start anew with new features.
Obviously any new chunks created in these alt-dimensions will generate chunks with the new generator so you aren't getting old-world generation.
Alternatives? Editing the old world and moving chunks (which means translating coordinates in commands and any coord-signs are then wrong). This has risks and depends on tools of inconsistent quality.
World Optimisation could offer to remove alt-dimensions and deactivate connecting portals.
Disk is cheap. Lost memories aren't. Myself, my children and their friends have created a lot of memories.
