I think Tanuki would be really cool to see in Minecraft :) They could be tamable like wolves or maybe be similar to foxes trusting you at least; they could be tamed or bred with berries like foxes, or maybe eggs. I think it’d be cool if there was a slight reference to their folklore counterparts, too, something to do with leaves (but not necessarily transforming the leaves, maybe they’d just be attracted to leaf blocks you’re holding or ones placed if they can reach them or something).
Maybe there could be something with them and emeralds (money)...? I think they should hunt a specific mob, too, like wolves and foxes do; maybe they could go near water for fish, or go for frogs when they’re added, or maybe hang near chickens for their eggs. I think it’d be funny if they and foxes avoided each other, too, due to “business between them has gone poorly in the past. Never trust a fox, a famous tanuki would say, hm?” They’d live in the same biome as foxes, though, due to liking berries, but they could possibly also live in other forests and near rivers or coasts.
That’s all I thought of for the tanuki, I hope they could be added :)
