The Strider mob was a great and thoughtful addition into the Nether Update, however some community members including myself think that the Strider's design is too simple and rather unfitting for the update. A suggestion would be an alternative for the Strider's legs, because it doesn't make sense to have a mob that "levitates" on top of lava. However, the main idea I would like to see become implemented into the Striders for the Nether Update is the ability for the Striders to travel both on lava and on land in the Nether.
This is because even though there is now a way for players to travel across lava oceans, some players including myself don't always want to have to travel across the treacherous terrains of the Nether on foot. It is rather time-consuming for players who are exploring in search for the bastions, for example. I think this may work with the Striders because since they should be able to walk on land as well since they have legs. Finally, what's annoying about Striders not being able to be "strided" on land, is that if you have travel across multiple lava lakes to get to your destination, you'll have to leave your Strider because it can't walk on land to get to the next lava lake.
