With the addition of the End into Minecraft, there was an incomplete vision. Although most things intended were added, the frame of end portals, and later end gateways, maintained a placeholder bedrock aesthetic. As once desired, this should change. Below, I have provided a texture and aesthetic to the portals using two unbreakable blocks: Caged Endstone and the Dragon Pearl Frame (Name courtesy of Daniel Capobianco).
The end portal upon killing the dragon:

The end portal upon entering the end:

The end gateway:

The primary function of these blocks is to provide an aesthetic to the end-related blocks which is not dissimilar to the End Portal Frames. This function does go further, as the Dragon Pearl Frame only gets filled with the pearl upon the Enderdragon’s death, which, when spawned, will shoot a beam of light in the direction of the end gateway. This will trigger an explosion and spawn in the gateway. This functionality provides the common player with a hint that there is more to explore, unlike previously in which new players could beat the Enderdragon unknowing of the portal that has opened up that allows them to explore further. The Dragon Pearl Frame, when active, would also emit thirty-two blocks of light. It is also worth mentioning some iron bars have been added around, forcing players to break them to access the end gateway.
Contact me if you want these textures, as I would be more than willing to provide them =)
