As of now, the wandering trader is rarely useful, as he charges bad prices for items most people have or don't care for;
A potential new trading mechanic he could have is of pawn selling: Giving away your excess tools, items and such for varying prices depending on enchantments and durability.
For example: Say you have a lot of enchanted iron armor, saddles and gold apples you've collected from an End City but have no use for. Whenever the trader shows up, you can sell these items that have less value in the endgame for emeralds, allowing you to "liquidate your assets" into emeralds, so to speak.
He would not accept blocks, ores, natural resources or anything that he sells; Equipment without enchantments would have standard toolsmith/weaponsmith pricing, and rarity items' prices, like music disks and gapples', would decrease as you sold more and more.
