The new snapshot for Java edition was just released and with it came the chain block. I think they are amazing for builders and will be a strong addition to the game. However, one of the things I kind of expected when I saw them connect to the top and bottom of a block was for them to be able to pull things like an actual chain would.
I also think that this idea could make for a unique Redstone feature. I would suggest giving the chain a vertical-only slime block behavior. That means it moves blocks with itself but only if both of the following happen:
1: It (the chain) is moved up or down,
2: The (movable) block is above or below it.
With this behavior, we would be able to make a chain of well... Chains!
The functionality of these chains would be unique for Redstone components because both slime blocks and honey blocks always try to move blocks with them. The use for this would be in moving Redstone parts where the machine should move blocks in 1 direction but not the other.
Say I want a machine that pulls a block below it up, then the machine is moved sideways to pull another block below it up. With these chains, you could use the chain to only move a block in 1 specific direction, that is, up or down, without moving the block when going horizontally!
