Netherstone is the Nether's version of redstone. As the name suggests, it is found in the Nether and can be collected by mining. Similar to how netherite is more rare than diamonds, netherstone is more rare than redstone, and is a valuable edition to redstone building. Netherstone is used and placed in the same way that redstone is, and it powers blocks in the same way. The only difference is that it doesn't connect to redstone, which allows you to create circuits that run next to each other. This is an invaluable feature that will make more compact redstone builds possible.
The idea of a second redstone color is not new (Mumbo has explored this subject), but making it a rare stone found in the Nether certainly is (as far as I know). Some people have suggested using dye plus regular redstone to create additional colors, but this would make colored redstone too easy to access and there would be hardly any additional effort. Netherstone creates an incredibly useful redstone feature that will change the game, but not in a harmful way. Collecting Netherstone takes a lot of effort, but for avid redstone builders, the time and risk involved is worth it. The edition of netherstone also introduces a new ore to the Nether and is another reason to go mining in the Nether. Considering quartz is already found in the Nether and used for redstone components, having an additional redstone ore in the Nether makes sense. Now you can mine for quartz, netherite, and netherstone in the Nether.
