A good use for crying obsidian could be for nether portals that can exponentially increase the distance you can normally travel using regular nether portals. For example, if you construct a nether portal using 8 crying obsidian, that will allow you to travel 8 blocks in the over world for every block in the nether. But let's say you wanted to travel even further, so you construct a nether portal using 16 crying obsidian. That would allow you to travel 16 blocks in the over world for every 1 block in the nether. This pattern could continue depending on how many crying obsidian the player is able to collect:
1:8
1:16
1:32
1:64
And so on.
This would solve many issues in survival mode where a player wants access to extremely distant biomes from a home base, without breaking the game (assuming crying obsidian is very rare)
