To add to the idea, they should also add End portals on their side.

If we do this, it will make the nether portal less unique. As the iconic 4x5 would be done away with. Also, what happens if you want to make obsidian flooring, and you accidentally make a portal?

Criminal that it's not already in the game it's kind of obvious when you think about it the bill potential the trapping potential I could have a lot of fun with a horizontal nether portal and it would make it easier to conceal

Really good idea for two reasons, first automatic farms, second just image jumping from one dimension to the next.

I agree. Horizontal Nether Portals would be an amazing addition to the game especially with 1.16 coming out. Think it would be really awesome to be able to jump into a portal and pop out again on the other side. I think it would be best executed if the horizontal portals were physics-based to where if you jumped through the portal from let's say 20 blocks up, you would have some air when you came back out, sort of like landing on a slime block. Obviously, no matter how high you jumped into the portal you would have to be launched at least 2 or 3 blocks upward so that you could escape the portal on the other side.

I agree with html56, I think it would take away the fun of needing to create that “iconic” nether portal shape, and it would look too similar to the end portal.

If anything, I believe the satisfaction of jumping into a portal is only best served for the End, as we are literally dropped in with no way to return unless if you beat the dragon. Or die.

Well the problem with this becomes, how do you light it? The fire isn't 'on' the obsidian so it wouldn't light

I think it only make sense to add laying Nether portals now because of the laying Nether portal ruins that you can find across your world.

Connor Schultz, it would not be a problem because you can actually light the standing nether portals by lighting any of the obsidian blocks, even the portal's ceiling. And if you can light any of the obsidian blocks in the standing Nether portas then you should easily be able to light lying Nether portals. And if you put a wooden objekt right outside of the standing portal and light it on fire on the side you can activate the Nether portal to just so you know. :)
