Currently in VR (Windows 10 Edition), the shield just floats in the lower left corner of your vision indefinitely, and it's distracting in a way that it just isn't when playing on a normal monitor.
Shields could be improved by allowing the off hand to control their position. Even if it doesn't affect whether the shield is blocking, it would still be an improvement (though that would be neat, too!).
If this is too much work, a quick fix could be to just not display the shield unless the player is blocking.
