With 1.14 we saw the addition of villager professions and pillagers but what we didn't see was any real purpose for these additions.
The villager professions gave us a selection of mostly useless trades and the pillager raids are simply an interesting thing to do in the game for an achievement and discount.
In order to give longevity to these additions we need to give them purpose whilst not taking away from the players who want to carry on raiding villages or simply trading with them.
The answer is to implement a fairly basic loyalty system with the village as a single entity. Your reputation goes up by trading and defending the village and in return they stock up a central storehouse with various low value items related to the professions available in your village.
The items placed in this central warehouse will be infrequent at first but as your reputation increases the rate at which its chests are filled increases too (though not excessively). On top of this there should be a loot table with a selection of rarer items (chainmail for example) that can sometimes appear in the storehouse and so increasing your reputation with the village will increase the tick rate for the resources giving greater chance of occasionally finding these items.
This gives us a reason to protect and grow a village whilst also giving greater reason for pillagers to exist. Particularly if they target the storehouse.
